Depression is more than just a psychological struggle. It is a complex neurobiological disorder that affects your brain on a structural and molecular level. In fact, it alters your brain’s structure, function, and chemistry, disrupting important mental processes involved in mood regulation, behavior, cognition, and emotional processing. Areas of your brain responsible for these functions, like the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, can be impacted, leading to imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Additionally, depression can impair neuroplasticity, your brain’s ability to adapt and reorganize itself, which affects learning, memory, and recovery.
Dr. Awosika and our team at Pinnacle Behavioral Healthcare recommend NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy to manage treatment-resistant depression. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is noninvasive and uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of your brain, particularly those linked to depression. During the NeuroStar procedure, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead, sending electrical currents into the brain tissue to “wake up” and activate these key areas.
The repeated pulses of magnetic energy from TMS sessions help stimulate brain activity and improve connectivity, which can enhance neuroplasticity. By modulating neurotransmitter levels, like serotonin and dopamine, NeuroStar works to improve your mood and alleviate depression symptoms.
NeuroStar is a progressive treatment that involves multiple sessions over several weeks. Dr. Awosika ensures that each treatment is personalized to your unique and individual needs, adjusting the intensity, frequency, and location of stimulation based on your response and any side effects you experience. This customized approach aims to produce longer-lasting changes in your brain function and mood regulation, offering you the potential for enduring relief.
